The 40th at Longford

Nadia's fortieth is in full swing at the Longford property, everyone out on the back deck around the fire pit. At nine, her husband Baz is still there telling the same story about his ute (Australian for utility for international readers) he's told a hundred times. At half past, Nadia goes to fetch him for the cake and finds him dead in the workshop.

Kellie: I went to feed the dogs around quarter past nine. Perry was already out by the ute for a smoke, gave me a wave. Back inside within five minutes, in plenty of time to see Nadia lighting the candles.

Perry: I'd been out by the ute since about ten past. Kellie came past on her way to feed the dogs, we had a yack for a minute. Went back in when Trevor came out to grab the esky.

Trevor: I stepped out for the esky about twenty-five past. Perry was still out there, said his smoke was nearly done. Wasn't out there thirty seconds myself.

Sonia: I got up around twenty past to find more folding chairs — the good ones live in the hay shed, other side of the yard. Wasn't gone long. Back at the table before Nadia went to fetch Baz.
